Reading  Workshop (Spanish)

Reading workshop begins with a mini lesson to the whole group. Students gather at the carpet with their book bags and writing materials, and I present and model the topic of the day: some of the topics cover making predictions, asking questions, analizing the sequence of events, finding the problem, theme and moral of the story, and so on. After that, I give the students an assignment for independent reading related to the mini lesson. Then the students find their independent reading spots and begin working on the assignment. The independent reading sessions last for 15 minutes, so if students finish their assignments, they can choose to read any other book in their bags, and write a response to reading. While most of the students are reading independently, I confer with individual students, or work with guided reading groups. While conferring with individual students, I check on their fluency, comprehension, I review their written responses, and together we establish goals for their reading. Depending on their specific level, goals can range from strategies to work on fluency, to how to learn and incorporate new vocabulary into their speaking and writing. When working with a guided reading group, we read a leveled reader book, discuss questions, practice reading skills, and connect as readers using the Spanish language.
